I grew up in a southern Italian family in Brooklyn. Not only was I was continuously exposed to all the specialty dishes that my mother, aunts, and both my grandmothers made but I also had my friends' mothers and grandmothers who would feed the guys in the neighborhood with everything including meatballs, homemade pizza, veal cutlets, eggplant or lasagna. I took it for granted that everyone ate like this all the time!As a got older I learned this was not the real world. I began to cherish the times I came home to the pasta with sardines, spaghetti with anchovies and walnuts or cod fish salad, or anything else my mother made.
This book is like COMING HOME, to anyone who grew up in an Italian environment or just enjoys eating Italian food. It is more than great recipes, it is great memories. I own many cookbooks and this one is quickly becoming a favorite. It is beautifully done, easy to follow, and the recipes are delicious and authentic! I am come from a large Italian family with many excellent cooks; this book brings back many fond memories. I am so glad to have exact recipes because for many years I have asked my mother and aunts to explain their dishes and they smile. They have never written anything down. So, Mr. Oliano's book is a gift! It is perfect for all levels because it is so well written! A must-have for anyone who loves Italian food!
One of the best cookbooks I have ever had. Ingredients and instructions are in everyday language which makes it easy to follow. Each recipe has a photo of the final result which helps when deciding what you want to make.
I appreciate the hints that accompany the recipes and one hint in particular was worth the cost of the book. What was it? I enjoy eating parmesan cheese, cut from a larger hunk. In the past I used a knife, trying to cut the thinnest slice possible until I read the hint that changed all that. It was suggested to use a vegetable peeler, which made a bunch of sense.
